Ruby and sapphire belongs to the same class of corundum family. These are known as the hardest gemstones along with diamond. Reaction of water with corundum converts it into crystalline form and through this structure they convert into gemstones. Reaction of corundum with coloring agents like Nickel and Chromium converts it into ruby or sapphires.

Indian rubies are mainly used for making of beads as they do not contain very good quality required for cut stones.  The best quality of blue sapphire is available in Kashmir region and they have color of peacock blue with a very good luster. In addition to this, a pin-point color tint in the bottom that can be seen in the whole of stone increases its beauty to a new level. Due to a high demand of Rubilite and sapphire beads all over the world, India in recent years emerged as a good exporter of them.
